Paramount Presents: Pablo Sa´inz Villegas
“…virtuosic playing … irresistible exuberance” –The New York Times
Praised as “the soul of the Spanish guitar,” Pablo Sa´inz Villegas has become a worldwide sensation known as this generation’s great guitarist. With his “virtuosic playing characterized by irresistible exuberance” as described by The New York Times, his interpretations conjure the passion, playfulness, and drama of Rioja, his homeland’s rich musical heritage. He is known for his passionate, emotive and open-hearted playing, whether he is performing at intimate recital halls, or playing with beloved tenor, Pla´cido Domingo, to an audience of over 85,000 at Santiago Bernabe´u Stadium in Madrid, where maestro Domingo hailed him as “the master of the guitar”.
Sa´inz Villegas wrapped up a thriving season, performing on a floating stage on the Amazon River with Pla´cido Domingo, which was live streamed worldwide to millions. Additionally, he gave the world premiere of Rounds, the first composition for guitar by five-time Academy Award-winner John Williams, and accomplished a summer tour through Japan with the National Orchestra of Spain. The 2017-18 season will see Sa´inz Villegas making various debuts, including at the prestigious National Performing Arts Center in Beijing, Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival Orchestra at the Millennium Park in Chicago, the New Zealand Symphony, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra in Oslo, New York’s iconic 92nd Street Y and Orquesta de Mineri´a in Mexico City, to name a few.

Lisa Beane: Karma
Lisa Beane: Karma
Andrea Douglas, Curator
Lisa Beane’s new exhibition Karma is comprised of 10 paintings and one artist book; all of which were completed over the course of the this year. Vibrantly colored images that recall the innocence of childhood are paired with those that point to darker, more sinister historic moments. The result is a frenetic dialogue between image and viewer. Beane’s paintings suggests the heightened anxiety that pervades the times in which we live. In the catalogue that accompanies the show, essayist Sarah Sargeant opines that Beane interrogates “fascism, national socialism, and terrorism.” She goes on to indicate that the artist’s paintings are partly inspired by the brutal and violent death of Farkhunda Malikzada in 2015. The Afghan woman was beaten to death, her body burned, and thereafter thrown into the river. Sargeant writes “Beane saw in the outcry here in the states, blatant hypocrisy and convenient amnesia. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that we were doing much the same thing.”
Lisa Beane’s Karma gives us the ability to see how far we have come and how far we have yet to go.
The catalogue is $15 and available for purchase in the Alumni Room museum shop and coffee bar.

The UVA Creative Writing Program and the Kapnick Foundation Present: Rita Dove and Mark Doty in Conversation
The UVA Creative Writing Program and the Kapnick Foundation present a conversation with esteemed poets Rita Dove and Mark Doty entitled “What Violence has Torn Apart: A conversation on writing across the lines.”
The late John Berger wrote that the work of “every authentic poem” is to “bring together what life has separated or violence has torn apart.” At this moment, many American poets feel keenly the importance of writing across divides. What can our poems do to cross the lines of race, gender, class, or sexual identity? What obstacles—imposed by ourselves or others—get in the way? Two poets—Rita Dove, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and Commonwealth Professor of English at UVA, and Mark Doty, National Book Award winner and Kapnick Distinguished Writer-in-Residence at UVA—will discuss these questions with each other and with the audience, talk about what they have or haven’t been able to write, and why poetry feels necessary now.

The Walking Dead – Season 8 Premiere!
Join us for the Season 8 premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead, broadcast live on the Big Screen at The Paramount! This event is FREE to attend and concessions will be available for purchase throughout the broadcast. Pre-registration is encouraged.
AMC’s pre-season synopsis is in! Read below for all that Season 8 promises:
“Last season, Rick Grimes and his group of survivors were confronted with their deadliest challenge yet. With the comfort of Alexandria, they let their guard down, only to be reminded how brutal the world they live in can be.
“Feeling powerless under Negan’s rules and demands, Rick advocated the group play along. But seeing that Negan couldn’t be reasoned with, Rick began rallying together other communities affected by the Saviors. And with the support of the Hilltop and Kingdom, they finally have enough fire power to contest the Saviors.
“This season, Rick brings ‘All Out War’ to Negan and his forces. The Saviors are larger, better-equipped, and ruthless — but Rick and the unified communities are fighting for the promise of a brighter future. The battle lines are drawn as they launch into a kinetic, action-packed offensive.
“Up until now, survival has been the focus of Rick and our group, but it’s not enough. They have to fight to take back their freedom so that they can live. So that they can rebuild. As with any battle, there will be losses. Casualties. But with Rick leading the Alexandrian forces, Maggie leading the Hilltop, and King Ezekiel leading the Kingdom – Negan and the Saviors’ grip on this world may finally be coming to an end.”

Collaborative Response to Intimate Partner Violence
Join local government and non-profit offices as we discuss our plan for a collaborative response to intimate partner violence in our community over complimentary snacks and refreshments. Collaborative Response to Intimate Partner Violence will host a community meeting to roll out their new plan to improve safety for victims of domestic violence. The meeting will be open to the public. It will be held from 3:00PM-4:30PM in the large meeting room at City Space. This plan serves to coordinate local criminal justice and service agency response to domestic/intimate partner violence. The purpose of the collaboration is to ensure that victims are supported and protected, while also ensuring that perpetrators of violence are held accountable and provided programming to reduce their likelihood of re-offending. This Collaborative Response team (comprised of local police and sheriff’s departments, Victim Witness, the Shelter for Help in Emergency, Emergency Response, and the Regional Jail) came together in response to the number of Intimate Partner Violence-related homicides in the area. This team used a series of evidence based decision making techniques to formulate specific plans and policies to reduce IPV-related homicides. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Join us for this chance to engage first-hand with the professionals in our area working to respond to and address this serious issue.
