Lisa Beane: Karma
Lisa Beane: Karma
Andrea Douglas, Curator
Lisa Beane’s new exhibition Karma is comprised of 10 paintings and one artist book; all of which were completed over the course of the this year. Vibrantly colored images that recall the innocence of childhood are paired with those that point to darker, more sinister historic moments. The result is a frenetic dialogue between image and viewer. Beane’s paintings suggests the heightened anxiety that pervades the times in which we live. In the catalogue that accompanies the show, essayist Sarah Sargeant opines that Beane interrogates “fascism, national socialism, and terrorism.” She goes on to indicate that the artist’s paintings are partly inspired by the brutal and violent death of Farkhunda Malikzada in 2015. The Afghan woman was beaten to death, her body burned, and thereafter thrown into the river. Sargeant writes “Beane saw in the outcry here in the states, blatant hypocrisy and convenient amnesia. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that we were doing much the same thing.”
Lisa Beane’s Karma gives us the ability to see how far we have come and how far we have yet to go.
The catalogue is $15 and available for purchase in the Alumni Room museum shop and coffee bar.

Paramount Presents: Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s Guess How Much I Love You & I Love My Little Storybook
The beloved childrens’ stories Guess How Much I Love You by author Sam McBratney and illustrator Anita Jeram & I Love My Little Storybook by Anita Jeram come to life on The Paramount’s stage in Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia’s delightful adaptation for our youngest audience members and those young at heart. This whimsical menagerie showcases the imaginative blend of evocative music, stunning visual effects and innovative puppetry that have earned Mermaid Theatre international acclaim.
“Guess how much I love you,” Little Nutbrown Hare asks Big Nutbrown Hare. Little Nutbrown Hare loves Big Nutbrown Hare as far as he can reach and as high as he can hop. Big Nutbrown Hare loves Little Nutbrown Hare back even more, as far as his long arms can reach and as high as his strong legs can hop. The story continues as the two use larger and larger measures to quantify how much they love each other! For two decades, this timeless story has captured the hearts of children and adults alike. The tale of the Nutbrown Hares competing to measure their love for one another, and Big Nutbrown Hare’s heart-warming declaration “I love you to the moon – and back,” have helped this story become a way of saying “I love you” all over the world.
In I Love My Little Storybook, an eager bunny lies on the grass and opens his book. Within moments, the story he is reading, created by illustrator Anita Jeram, comes alive in fascinating detail and is an endearing celebration of the joy of reading.
